The role of entrepreneurial networks in rural tourism development in Northern Ireland

Student thesis: Doctoral Thesis

Abstract

This study examines the impact of entrepreneurial networks on rural tourism development, exploring their interplay with the unique socio-economic and cultural contexts in which they operate. Positioned within the broader field of tourism entrepreneurship, it identifies key characteristics, challenges, and the transformative potential of entrepreneurial networks in rural settings. Using a qualitative approach that integrates in-depth interviews with rural tourism entrepreneurs, the study provides fresh perspectives on how these networks function and influence rural tourism.

Key findings highlight the critical role entrepreneurial networks play in promoting economic growth, cultural preservation, and social cohesion. These networks facilitate knowledge exchange, innovation, and the preservation of rurality and cultural heritage while supporting collective advocacy to navigate the complexities of rural tourism markets and regulatory environments. The study emphasises the importance of tailoring rural tourism development strategies to the specific socio-economic and cultural landscapes of rural areas to enhance their efficacy and sustainability. This work contributes to theoretical literature on entrepreneurial networks and rural tourism development by offering a deeper understanding of how these networks operate within and impact rural settings. For policymakers and practitioners, actionable insights are provided to cultivate a supportive environment that advances rural development and tourism sustainability. The findings also address practical challenges such as geographic isolation and health and wellbeing concerns, advocating for a comprehensive approach to the economic, cultural, and environmental facets of rural tourism development.
