Abstract
This thesis investigates the impact of skills competitions on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Despite the importance of vocational education for building a skilled workforce and driving economic growth, Emirati students' enrollment rate in TVET remains low. The government aims to increase enrollment to 40% by 2027. Skills competitions are viewed as marketing tools and motivators, enhancing program quality, attracting industry partners, and stimulating investments in vocational education. The study examines the role of skills competitions in promoting TVET in the UAE by identifying participant perceptions about their impact on TVET
.
Four guiding questions were formulated:
1. What are UAE nationals' perceptions regarding the influence of skills competitions on choosing vocational education?
2. What role do skills competitions play in UAE's Technical and Vocational Education?
3. How do competitors perceive skills competitions and their value in UAE vocational education?
4. What are experts' perceptions about skills competitions and their value in UAE vocational education?
An explanatory sequential mixed-method design was employed, utilizing archived data, surveys, and focus groups for data triangulation. Surveys and focus group discussions were conducted with UAE competitors and experts who participated in the last three WorldSkills Competitions.
Findings reveal an increase in new students enrolling in vocational schools, providing insights into UAE TVET trends. Competitors' perceptions highlight the influence of skills competitions on their choice of vocational education, while experts emphasize their role in introducing TVET to the public. Thematic content analysis of focus groups supports the quantitative analysis.
This thesis contributes to understanding the impact of skills competitions on vocational education in the UAE, informing policymaking and supporting the development of a skilled workforce. The findings provide valuable insights for educational institutions, industry partners, and government entities involved in promoting and advancing TVET in the country.
