Abstract
Periodontal diseases (PD) are widespread oral conditions caused by bacterial imbalance, leading to inflammation, tooth loss, and systemic complications. Current diagnostic methods—such as probing and radiography—are invasive, costly, and limited in assessing disease activity, creating a need for rapid, low-cost alternatives. Point-of-care testing (POCT) platforms using biofluid biomarkers offer promise but face challenges in standardisation and sensitivity. Hydrogels have emerged as a novel solution for minimally invasive oral fluid collection due to their high water retention and customizable properties. This thesis investigates hydrogel-based devices for sampling gingival crevicular fluid to detect epigenetic and inflammatory markers in PD.Thesis is embargoed until 31 March 2027.
