Abstract
This chapter considers the wet skid resistance of asphalt surfacing materials. It considers the difference between the terms friction and skid resistance, explores tyre/road friction and the importance of the contact patch, and deals with road surface macrotexture and aggregate microtexture. How road surface course materials are tested in the field and in the laboratory is then summarised. The chapter concludes by asking the question – skid resistance, what’s next?
