Abstract

In October 2012, Golden and McComish were invited to present about their joint research titled Urban Research Belfast at the Fumbally Exchange Design Dialogue 2 conference, an international event bring together creative professionals to share lessons from work in Ireland, the UK, and further afield in Europe. Golden and McComish presented the context and lessons of their collaborative research and teaching work in Belfast, as captured in their co-edited book Machines for Experiential Urban Learning. Machines for Experiential Urban Learning, published by PLACE Ltd (Planning, Landscape, Architecture, Community, Environment), Northern Ireland’s Architecture and Built Environment Centre. Golden and McComish presented qualitative research about inter-disciplinary experiential approaches to urban and graphic design within the context of place-making aspirations for people and the built environment, argued as common to both architecture and graphic design disciplines. Golden and McComish argued for and present evidence of a shift from object- to process-led priorities in their respective design field.
