Upright Men Seeking Upright Man: Pithecanthropus Erectus, Tokyo, Japan

Abstract

To most jazz fans, Pithecanthropus Erectus will likely resonate as the title of the iconic 1956 Charles Mingus album. To anyone who has walked the back streets of Kamata, a down-at-heel suburb in one of the less glamorous Tokyo neighborhoods south of glittery Shibuya and grittier Shinjuku, it may also be familiar as the name of one classic example of the gradually fading world of Japanese jazu kissa.
