Abstract
This presentation explores the transformative experience of a novel final year occupational therapy student placement within a clinical hand therapy unit offering both interventions for hand trauma and research experience. The immersive learning environment fostered the application and progression of knowledge whilst nurturing the application of clinical and research skills.
The student and educator journey are presented, conveying the nuanced challenges and successes associated with the placement (Lau 2019). The unique integration of research and practice in this placement empowered the student (Zuchowski 2020) and educator to explore the intersectionality of research and hands-on therapeutic approaches in the context of hand rehabilitation.
By sharing insights gained from this innovative placement model, the presentation showcases the transformative impact on the student in shaping a competent, confident future occupational therapy practitioner and researcher. The collaborative potential between academia and clinical settings, promoting a holistic approach to occupational therapy education, clinical practice and research is highlighted.
This presentation advocates for the continued evolution of student practice education (Beveridge 2020), calling for more opportunities that combine clinical and research experience on placement to enrich occupational therapy education, increase our profession’s evidence base and promote optimal patient outcomes across the specialisms of our profession.
