The Maritime Trail: An interactive mobile-based application for Android and iOS devices connecting the tangible and intangible heritage of the vernacular boat tradition from the North of Ireland

The Maritime Trail is an augmented reality application for the iOSand Android mobile phones and devices that augments 6 items from a vernacular boat collection of the National Museums of Northern Ireland Ulster Transport Museum at Cultra along with the sounds recorded at the locations where the boats operated in the past (Portbradden; Lough Neagh; Lough Erne; Bunbeg; Gola and Rathlin islands). The boats are accompanied by the stories of the fishermen who worked in the craft in questions as well as the stories of the local storytellers about the locations and the traditional music tunes composed there. The project was funded by the AHRC Follow-on Funding as well as by InvestNI Proof of Concept and University of Ulster’s Proof of Principle awards, and developed in collaboration with the National Museums of Northern Ireland.
