Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of green tea and chlorhexidine mouthwashes on the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis, with the objective of identifying a potential herbal alternative for reducing or eliminating the bacteria’s load. Plaque samples were collected from participants enrolled in a randomised controlled trial, both before and after the use of green tea and chlorhexidine mouthwashes. Microbial load and bacterial content were subsequently analysed. The findings demonstrated that both green tea and chlorhexidine significantly inhibited the growth of P. gingivalis at low concentrations. Notably, green tea mouthwash exhibited comparable efficacy to conventional chlorhexidine, suggesting its potential as a natural alternative in the management of periodontal and peri-implant infections.
