Abstract
In this paper, some of the problems faced by software engineers involved in the development of embedded condition-monitoring systems are considered, and it is argued that the success of such projects may be enhanced through the use of appropriate, software patterns'. The motivation for the assembly of a collection of patterns for embedded systems is briefly explained, and the application of a selection of these patterns in the development of various embedded systems is discussed.
