Abstract
This three-year study investigated the increase in commuting from rural settlements to urban centres. It sought to fill a gap in understanding of the impacts of outcommuting on small rural settlements, especially long-distance and long-duration commuting.
Using a case study approach, this study focused on seven rural towns across Ireland and Northern Ireland, as well as two in the state of Maryland, USA.
The findings reveal a range of opportunities and challenges associated with long-distance commuting, and offers insights for policymakers, planners, and local governments on its impacts on rural life.
