Abstract

'Talking Sheds' take the form of two print constructions which amongst many influences, explore concepts of Anthropomorphism with particular focus on inanimate objects around the home. Inherited pieces of furniture are scrutinised in order to extract their inner spiritual essence and human characteristics.  The 'object' is chosen not particularly for it's aesthetic qualities, but rather that it tells a story and bears emotional memories and physical traces of the past. The 'wardrobe' is de-constructed, and subsequently through a long journey involving many process stages, re-constructed in order to reveal it's true inner identity. The concept of linking 'objects and emotions' is frequently discussed amongst Product Designers . I was motivated by  Don Norman's book 'Emotional Design : Why we Love (or hate) Everyday Things'. Alan Powers' journal article on James Hilman published in 'Crafts' (September 2002 issue 178, p28-29) discusses James Hillman's belief in the contribution of objects to the world soul: " I'm talking about things, things. Tables and cars and shoes and tin cans, plastic. We have to open our minds to the possibility of soul everywhere; we can't exclude things from it and only love nature." "Talking Sheds" was accompanied by 18 related print artworks for a three person exhibition at The Oriel Gallery, Clotworthy House, Antrim, (Feb-March 2019)." Talking Sheds" and the accompanying body of works for this exhibition was facilitated by an ACNI SIAP Award (awarded Nov 2017) which enabled me to purchase an etching press with adjustable rollers to accommodate printing from plaster cast plates on to clay in addition to printing from metal plates on to paper.  The construction was subsequently exhibited in 'Works on Paper', The Town House Gallery, Belfast (6th-29th June 2019) and selected by jury and exhibited in The National Original Print Exhibition, The Bankside Gallery, London (18-29 September 2019).
