Abstract

Learning objectives
After reading this chapter you should be able to:
1. Appreciate the stressors and mental health challenges faced by sports
officials.
2. Understand the impact of sport- specific stressors, such as verbal and
physical abuse, on sports officials’ mental health and retention in the sport.
3. Understand and critically evaluate the value of using psychological theory based
interventions to support sports officials’ mental health.
4. Consider and critically evaluate research and practice recommendations
when designing and implementing interventions to support sport officials’
mental health and to increase their recruitment and retention.
