'Supporting Clinical Competencies in Post Pandemic Higher Education'

Abstract

It is essential that radiography students are introduced to the practical aspects of their future career early on in their academic life. The delivery of this aspect of radiography education must adequately develop clinical competencies thereby fulfilling the expectations of the Quality Assurance Agency Benchmark Statements for Radiography, the Health and Care Professions Council Standards of Proficiency for Radiographers (HCPC 2013), and Standards of Education and Training (HCPC 2017), as well as the Society and College of Radiographers Education and Career Framework for the Radiography Workforce (SCoR 2013).
To mitigate against any educational detriment in the unfamiliar world of post pandemic higher education, a platform for distance learning for first year students is being constructed to permit early exposure to the principles of clinical radiography and on demand review of clinical scenarios. This project aims to enhance clinical competencies using a problem-based learning pedagogy. Cases will be presented to students and will include positioning videos with accompanying radiographs. Students will be expected to identify errors in patient positioning, the effect on resultant radiographic images and discuss aspects of patient care. Nearpod(r) will be used as an online platform to allow unlimited access with immediate feedback and correction. Videos will be produced using members of academic staff from the Diagnostic Radiography team in the clinical simulation suite of Ulster University.
Qualitative comments and engagement statistics will be gathered throughout to monitor the efficacy of this project.
