Abstract
The diversity in the gut microbiome regulates the general well‐being of humans while a disturbance in its state of equilibrium is considered the cause of several health problems. However, the diversity and population of friendly species constituting the gut microbiome depend on several factors; even so, the most important one incorporates the intake of functional nutrients through the correct practice and choices of food, as well as the use of health supplements. The article describes those probiotic strains, which have been studied and identified as good constituents of the gut microbiome, and employed for the production of popular food and beverage products available to consumers in local supermarkets. As well as, information has been presented on selected microbial strains that have been included in the formulations of commercial health supplements, which are available to buy online and in health shops globally. These products have been marketed to provide benefits to consumers, contributing to two main aspects—nutrition and health; hence, these are commonly known as nutraceuticals. This article aims to discuss the functional food and health products containing probiotic strains as an efficient practice for sustaining necessary microbial diversity in the gut microbiome, which is important for managing the active functioning of metabolic activities in hosts influenced by a healthy gut microbiome.
