Abstract

This impact project evolved from a keynote I gave at the No Place Like Home symposium at Photo Museum Ireland in 2023 and was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council's Impact Accelerator scheme. Along with Cormac McArt from Westcourt Centre I developed a photography project for women experiencing homelessness, an invisible but rapidly increasing issue in the housing crisis in Northern Ireland.

Over a series of workshops, we worked on strategies for the participants to communicate their experiences and perspectives. These were focused on developing their agency around their own narratives, and building awareness and empathy in the wider public towards those experiencing homelessness. I also worked with designers to create advocacy material for distribution to schools and organisations.

The project was presented with a talk at Belfast City Hall for Homelessness Awareness Week 2024. The outcomes were launched with an exhibition and public event in March 2025 in which the women discussed the process and the images they had made, and followed by further exhibitions and events, including visits to schools.
