Stellatundra: Sim Smith Gallery London

Curated by gallery artist Tim Garwood, Stelltundra brought together an intergenerational group of artists working across contemporary abstraction. The exhibition explored material openness and process-led approaches to painting, foregrounding practices concerned with experimentation, gesture and the physical properties of paint. Through the presentation of diverse painterly languages, the exhibition considered how abstraction continues to evolve through material enquiry and expanded approaches to form.

Robinson exhibited two paintings, Jelly Ear (2023) and Butterbur (2023). These works investigated the relationship between painted surface, inflated form and material physicality through the incorporation of stuffed elements that disrupted the conventional boundaries of the canvas support. The exhibition provided an important context in which to situate Robinson's practice alongside historical and contemporary approaches to abstraction. Of particular significance was the inclusion of John Hoyland's Spirit of Venus (1988), initiating an ongoing engagement with Hoyland's work that has continued to inform Robinson's research into post-war abstraction and its contemporary resonance.
