Abstract

Star Wolf is an immersive storytelling animation project brought to life by the talent and skills of student animators and student game designers working together, under the guidance of Alan Hook, Sabrina Minter, Daryl Randall and Alec Parkin. It uses a portable, inflatable projection dome in ultra-HD and works alongside storyteller Vicky McFarland to create an immersive retelling of Star Wolf (a story of well-being and resilience) using animation and games development technology.

The project explores:
• What can animation and gaming bring to a sensory story to excite a young audience?
• What productive models can be formed from oral storytelling traditions using emerging technology?
• What challenges are produced, and what are the appropriate methods for working through these challenges, when we think about collective story immersion?
• How can the synergies between story delivery across a range of mediums create new experiences for audiences?
• How can cutting edge technologies (virtual production, real time production) be implemented in innovative ways outside of LED panel VP?

This exploratory project culminates in an enjoyable and exciting performance piece for young audiences. It employs cutting edge technology from virtual production and dome projection pipelines to create digital elements that enhance the experience for audiences.
