Sever/Isolate: Political Affairs

Abstract

Group Exhibition at Hamburger Kunstverein , Hamburg which exhibited Willie Dohertyʼs Sever/Isolate, 1989, diptych, black and white photographs with text. Doherty’s early distrust for depending on what can be perceived as a precise historical record led to an interest in the inconsistencies and ambiguities of images. In Strategy: Severe/ Isolate (1989), Doherty addresses how images spread through mass media influence our interpretation of people and events. Instead of a factual representation of the political landscape, he raises questions about the internal truth claims of photographs and the possibility of authenticity. Doherty’s works refer to how society moves along and is divided by binary ideological lines of catholic/ nationalistic/republican versus protestant/ unionist/loyalist: dualities that are constantly complicated by Doherty’s practice and even turn up here as a special vanishing point.
