This paper is an academic contribution to the debate on the politicisation of a particularly brutal form of violence (so called ‘punishment' beatings and shootings) perpetrated by paramilitary organisations in Northern Ireland. It also prompts politicians and policy makers to confront the reality of ‘ignoring' this form of criminality in the interests of the wider political process.
