Abstract
This essay for the first time investigated cwhat the function of the system of literature is in the work of this seminal contemporary artist. He investigates literature in all its components: from the writer's study to the paper and typeface of his many works that are either books or deal with the book in an variety of ways: as understated "retro" publications, insertions into existing texts or as sculptural objects.Heretofore, it had been assumed that his long-standing interest in the book was something conceptuallydifferent from his preoccupation with film. I found that this was not the case and that literature was a key element to this "hedonistically conceptual" artist..The book accompanied a major retroscpective and was translated into four languages.
