Abstract
This paper considers current research into improving the sustainability of asphalt surfacingmaterials in the United Kingdom. The overall aim of the research has been to reduce risk and encourage the ideals of sustainability in the provision of road surfacing materials. Theresearch has involved the use of standard and specialist laboratory techniques, test facilities and in-service measurement. The methodologies have been proven in collaborative research projects that have resulted in better understanding of material performance and failure characteristics. They have been used to develop new surfacing materials with enhanced performance characteristics.
