Abstract
This conceptual paper offers a review of three response models that can be used by incumbent firms facing the threat of disruptive innovation. These frameworks are discussed in light of their applicability to the licensed accommodations sector’s responses to Airbnb as a disruptor. As found in this paper, none of the examined models provides a holistic solution for this contextual environment due to the unique characteristics and challenges of the licensed accommodations sector when responding to Airbnb as a disruptor. A new conceptual response stage model framework is proposed specifically for the licensed accommodations sector impacted by peer-to-peer disruption from Airbnb.
