Abstract

In medical education, crafting high-quality Problem-Based Learning (PBL) scenarios is essential yet time-consuming, often relying on the collaboration of busy academics and clinicians (Wood, 2003). At Ulster University’s School of Medicine, we explored how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support this process, trialling ChatGPT to develop a PBL case on cerebral haemorrhage (Abouzeid & Harris, 2023). This blog draws on our experiences, as presented in "Insights Gained from Using AI to Produce Cases for Problem-Based Learning" (Abouzeid & Harris, 2025). My motivation stemmed from the dual challenges of time constraints and the growing demand for up-to-date, realistic cases. This post shares how AI transformed our approach, offering insights for educators seeking to harness technology without compromising educational quality.
