Abstract

Re:Collection - University of Ulster, Graphic Design and Advertising Archive, Launch Exhibition 24th March-2nd April 2010, Meter House, Belfast. An initiative to develop an archive of notable graphic design and advertising material produced in Northern Ireland for future reference and research. The cultural and commercial significance of visual communication in society will be better informed through this research and the archive will contribute to our understanding of this role with particular reference to regional heritage in national and global contexts. It is our intention to collect and document visual records of the logos, packaging, press and poster advertising, brands, commercials, television idents, web, multimedia and associated artefacts generated by local design and advertising companies and individuals. We have deliberately avoided setting any chronological parameters and will accept contributions from any era. We anticipate that the majority of material will be post 1950 to the present day. An exhibition of preliminary material in spring 2011. The archive will be stored digitally and physically and expanded as material becomes available.
