Abstract

The article compares an Old Irish saga Cath Muige Mucrame with a Russian folktale 'The dream that has never been told' with a particular reference to Stith Thompsons's folklore motifs H 161.0.1 'Recognition of person among identical companions' and H 1567.1.1 'Test of leadership (obedience) by swallowing a mouse without vomiting'. Propp's methodology is applied to explain the protagonist's multiplication device central to both tales.
