Abstract

This chapter introduces a series of theoretical models that underpin the development and maintenance of accessible sport venues. We begin by explaining the importance of philosophy in understanding disability and accessibility, presenting models such as the medical, social, and social-relational frameworks. These models critically shape our approach to managing accessible venues in sport, with each offering a perspective on disability. The chapter emphasises how societal structures, policies, and attitudes limit or enable individuals and explores the human rights approach through international conventions like the UNCRPD. Following this we highlight the concept of Universal Design (UD) as a solution for creating inclusive environments, focusing on accessibility for all users, not just people with disability. The chapter concludes by urging the need for continuous improvements in accessibility and the role of sport venue managers in adopting and promoting UD principles.
