Abstract
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is now well embedded across healthcare as the following chapters and case studies will demonstrate. In addition, the concept of person centredness in healthcare is recommended and practised internationally. It is hypothesised that AI will speed up or eradicate certain tasks in the clinical department, thereby allowing clinicians more time to spend caring for their patients, identifying different treatment options and transforming health service delivery. AI also enables patients to be more informed about their treatment pathway and have more control over their own health needs. These advances all support the delivery of person-centred practice (PCP) in healthcare whereby the individual's needs, values and preferences are prioritised when delivering care and making decisions. It places the person at the centre of their own care, recognising their unique experiences, beliefs and healthcare goals. Whether these advances in AI translate into PCP in clinical practice remains to be seen. It is incumbent on all healthcare professionals to ensure that PCP remains at the core of our service delivery and AI does not merely act as a tool to increase output and speed up the patient ‘conveyor belt’. This chapter will explore the concept of PCP in the radiology department and the impact of AI on patient care.
