Abstract
Ken Grant contributed the contextual research essay 'Paper Folds' to introduce Noel Bowler's most recent work about the condition of the international newspaper industry. Bowler states: "Above The Fold is a series of photographs taken in some of the most respected and recognised newspaper newsrooms from around the world. Made over a six year period and working together with a cross section of some of the largest newspapers (by paid circulation) from around the world, these photographs will take the viewer on a journey through decades of human interaction that has helped to form the foundation of the press as we know it today. The work of the newspaper and journalism movement has never been so relevant for so many throughout the world. This timely work continues (Noel Bowler's) ongoing consideration of the political forces that shape our world and the importance of a free and trustworthy press." Grant's research examined the role of photography, and in particular non-peopled / architectural photography as a strategy through which a photographer might examine institutional power and the news industry at a time in which traditional journalistic approaches are declining. In particular, he draws on the notions of late photography and considers Bowler's approach in the context of pioneers in photography who have worked with nuanced and oblique strategies to examine the infrastructures of news organisations and those who work for them.
