Abstract

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Northern Ireland, the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) had to close its archives to the public and move all outreach work online. Until then, most of its outreach was being delivered in-person under the EU Peace IV-funded Making the Future project. From March 2020 to May 2021, the Making the Future team completed seven virtual programmes, enabling over 100 people to engage with archives through filmmaking, comic book-making, cooking and photo embroidery. In this paper, we discuss the process of moving PRONI’s outreach work online and the strengths and limitations of in-person and virtual engagement.
