New EU Food Law, New System, New Responses

Abstract

The Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) mission in the UK was briefly introduced, along with notable recent IFST Northern Ireland Branch activities. Key points from the New European Community Food Law package, comprising Regulations EC 178/2002, EC 852/2004, EC 853/2004 and EC 2073/2005 , were covered. Key elements of EN IS0 22000: 2005 "Food Safety Management System requirements along the food chain" were covered. Finally, examples drawn from the 2007 IFST Annual Conference at which the Speaker chaired the lead organising committee, were used to illustrate some recent responses to food safety challenges.
