Irish lives: Alan Gilsenan's cinema in context presents the Portuguese-speaking reader with articles on the lives of Irish writers and artists - such as w. B. Yeats, tom murphy, paul durcan, liam clancy and sean scully - and historical figures - roger casement, eliza lynch and patrick pearse - represented in the film work of alan gilsenan. the volume, part of the cultural studies series of the postgraduate program in english at the federal university of santa catarina, results from the film festival - and series of seminars and theatrical performances - around the work of irish filmmaker alan gilsenan, “irish lives : the cinema of alan gilsenan ”, held at ufsc, in three stages, in 2015 and 2016. Alan gilsenan is an award-winning filmmaker, writer and irish theater director. Born in dublin, he graduated in english and sociology from trinity college dublin and established himself as one of the most important filmmakers in contemporary ireland. Gilsenan directed more than thirty films for cinema and television, including the biographies covered in this book: the ghost of roger casement (2002); sing on forever (2003); paul durcan: the dark school, 1944 -1971 (2007); the yellow bittern: the life and times of liam clancy (2008); the bloody canvas (2009); O pheann an phiarsaigh (2010); eliza lynch: queen of paraguay (2013); and vision: a life of w. B. Yeats (2014). Irish lives: Alan Gilsenan's cinema in context explores the possibilities for cinema to represent biographies on the screen, with alternative perspectives to those of historical writings and conventional biographies, in a creative and questioning way,
