Abstract

Visual Arts Talk

36th John Hewitt International Summer School [2023]

Through their mutual interests and shared beliefs, John Hewitt writer, curator and art critic, and the artist, John Luke, were colleagues, comrades and, at times, inseparable companions. In Hewitt’s posthumously published autobiography, North Light (c.1961), Luke was the only artist or friend designated an entire chapter. Yet, while Hewitt is widely remembered today, Luke is hardly known at all. This lecture reconsiders this and the impact of Hewitt on Luke’s life and art, through a closer review of Hewitt’s published art criticism and their unpublished correspondence.
