Abstract
I rebut criticism, by the American academic David Sorkin, in his The Religious Enlightenment (2008), of my account of Jacob Vernet's theology (in Jacob Vernet, Geneva and the philosophes, published in 1994). After defending my account, I widen the discussion as to the nature of the Enlightenment, arguing that Sorkin's account is skewed and inaccurate in several ways, and showing that he makes frequent factual errors.
