Abstract

The University of Connecticut (UCONN) is part of an international research consortium along with University of Ulster, Empa, Concrete Research and Testing LLC and Université Laval funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the Geological Survey of Ireland to investigate the cause of concrete failure in defective properties in county Donegal. The role of UCONN in the consortium was to perform a comprehensive material characterization and analysis study on concrete samples obtained from four residences in County Donegal, Ireland to investigate the cause of concrete failure. Three of the residences exhibit cracking distress typical of that associated with defective concrete blocks. All had been previously assessed by Donegal County Council following I.S. 465 protocols that confirmed they were constructed from defective concrete while the fourth residence was chosen as a control and had no cracking distress
