Abstract
We introduce the reference book 'Sandy Beach Morphodynamics' (2020) edited by Derek Jackson and Andrew Short. The chapter initially summarises the early history of morphodynamic studies on sandy beaches and outlines progress to date in this rapidly evolving scientific field. This introductory chapter concludes with an overview of the content of each of the other 28 chapters of the book, written by over 50 leading international coastal scientists.
