Abstract

This chapter sets out the critical framework for the edited collection of essays that is the rest of the book. It provides a context for the discussion of Marie Jones's work as one of Ireland's leading contemporary playwrights that identifies the ways in which it has been conditioned by her background in Belfast. It places her too within a wider framework of the development of theatre practice on the island of Ireland and within a tradition of popular theatre that is informed by a range of international practice.
