Abstract

This chapter introduces the reader to the aims and rationale of a monograph on Accessible Sport Venues. Following an introduction to the inter-disciplinary field that comprises accessible and inclusive sports venues we outline our research questions that drive this analysis. Gaining sustained academic and professional interest in the value of disability studies and accessibility research has proven difficult in sport related research. We set out to highlight the folly of this disregard while outlining initially the social and business cases for why this research is important. Following this we draw the reader’s attention to the importance of conceptualising disability before introducing the major socio-ecological model that underpins our analysis throughout the text. This chapter concludes by outlining the structure of the book in order to stress the timeliness of change in this area and how it can benefit sport venues internationally.
