Abstract

Given the growing complexity and energy consumption of customer premises equipment (CPE) in smart home networks and the consequent need for optimal energy usage, there is a need for better coordination of the power operational states of the CPE devices. In particular, this paper presents an energy model to synchronise the behaviour of a Home-Gateway (HG) with the CPE such as a set-top box with exemplar data flow such as IPTV. In addition, we explore the policy engine to monitor and control the energy consumption as a function of application QoS, traffic load, availability and link health across the networks, paying particular attention to the CPE device transitional power states. Our approach is, therefore, better suited for providing guaranteed quality and at the same time is more energy efficient.
