Abstract
I have explored different types of space in myriad ways in my photographic practice. Whilst my work is primarily concerned with image making through photographic means, my research also investigates how my photographs occupy the gallery space and how the environment surrounding the image informs how it is viewed and experienced. To this end my practice moves beyond traditional understandings of photography, to incorporate installation to create physically and conceptually expansive spaces within which to view photographs. Whilst my installations are fabricated to accompany the photographic images, they also have autonomy and can be viewed as independent structures.
My installations use large-scale sculptural elements such as, curtains, floor coverings and rostrum-like structures, to convey a sense of theatrically, that explores themes of spectacle and performance in the everyday, is an important thematic of my practice. This installation was devised to accompany the photograph, 'Quietly Dispelling the Dark' (PURE ID: 132875768). The installation, comprising large-scale grey curtains hovering above a stage-like structure, is flanked by steps at either side, that are devised to lead towards the photographic image. There is a deliberate interplay between what is illuminated in the photographic image, with its back-lit light source and what is obscured by the installation curtains that evoke a sense of concealment.
This installation formed part of the solo exhibition, 'Places We think We Know', at Dundee Contemporary Arts in 2021.
