Abstract
This article explores the complex and interdisciplinary nature of language policy and planning (LPP), and then proposes an introductory typology of language policies. The article then compares two language policies of the same type, namely the language policy for the protection and promotion of the Friulian language in the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the language policy in favour of Cimbrian, Ladin and Mocheno in the Autonomous Province of Trento. We focus on the role of the indicators in the programming and evaluation of the two language policies, and thus on the data used to feed them. On the basis of this comparison, the article concludes with suggestions on how the data from the CLAM ("Cimbri, Ladin and Mocheni") sociolinguistic survey can be used for future language policy planning in the Autonomous Province of Trento.
