Abstract

The construction of Intelligent Environments is a highly resource intensive process that is subject to limitations in terms of space, time, and money. Availability of datasets generated by such environments for the testing of new approaches may therefore be limited. The use of simulated Intelligent Environ-ments offers a method of creating rich datasets with maximum control and min-imal costs and constraints. IE Sim is a visual approach to Intelligent Environment simulation with a focus on ease of use and flexibility. This paper discusses the key features of IE Sim, and discusses the results of a software evaluation performed by 21 international researchers with an interest in such datasets. The evaluation rated IE Sim highly in terms of ease of use and usefulness in research, and identified key requirements for future developments.
