Abstract
This was a keynote talk to a symposium of postgraduate tourism students from across Finland. The talk was based around the following 4 areas: how we define heritage and nature-based tourism; natural heritage environments and their suitability for nature-based tourism, the challenges of managing heritage environments where nature-based tourism is promoted and finally, some strategy thinking is offered at the end for heritage and nature-based tourism using the case example of the Catlins region of the South Island, New Zealand where the author was involved in developing the region's tourism plan.
