Research output: Book/ReportOther report

Abstract

The research investigates and devises a guidewire separator device to help manage the operator’s workflow, decluttering their physical environment and their cognitive load. There were two Research Grants funded by HSCNI, relating to responding to the unmet need of a Cardiology Guidewire separation device (stages 1 and 2). Stages 3 and 4 related to the iterative product development and testing towards manufacturability and commercialisation. This was funded by Ulster University.

1. Initially an exploratory and ideation phase to understand the issues and produce possible ways in which the issues may be solved.

2. The next phase related to the materials specification of production materials meeting relevant standards. Whiles indicative materials have been proposed and a series of requirements for the product in use specified, a more definitive specification and contextualised documentation is required to meet the clinical environment needs. An industry expert has been identified to provide an independent viewpoint. Dr Magee led discussions and dialogue with the company regarding product requirements. Ulster University commissioned the report.

3. The product was further developed and refined in the context of these new materials specifications. Several international suppliers and manufacturing companies were invited to provide quotations for manufacture. A commercial Impact Award was secured from Ulster University, as well as Research Unit support funding to enable this iterative development

4. Commercialisation strategy developed working initially with M3 Medical, a leading medical supplies company based in Dublin.
