Gender roles, dynastic politics, and defamation: The challenges of Maria Carolina of Naples as queen consort

Abstract

This essay provides an assessment of Maria Carolina’s challenges as queen consort of Ferdinand IV, by examining various relevant contemporary pieces of correspondence. The fndings of this research ultimately show that powerful queen consorts were especially vulnerable to slanderous attacks on their honour whenever their political ambitions went beyond their expected traditional roles of faithful wives and devoted mothers.
