Abstract

This innovation project contributed to improved technical standards and business growth within acompany. The project aims were to enhance a company’s growing and packing procedures, and develop its new product development systems for added value herb, leaf and salad products. Evidence of achievement exists in Bord Bia Horticulture Quality Assurance Scheme approval, enhanced technical standards based on BRC requirements which can be transferred to the new factory once commissioned, reduced impact of poor growing conditions on the quality of leafy vegetables, sales of potted herb products with Musgrave, and a pipeline of product and packaging development projects (e.g. micro leaf and pesto products). The knowledge transferred in growing procedures, microbial quality assurance and new product development systems has helped to underpin major strategic business objectives towards BRC accreditation within a new factory operating environment and commercialisation of more added value herb (e.g. retail potted herbs) and leafy vegetable products (e.g. restaurant trade), whilst strengthening the company’s brand position in Ireland.
