Abstract

Welcome to the 18th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on the Engineering of
Computer-Based Systems (ECBS 2011). The theme this year is Cyber-Physical Systems, a topic
that is quickly gaining traction in both academic and industrial discussions because of the
relevance of CPS problems to societal issues such as energy, water, healthcare, and transportation.
Computer-based systems feature prominently in how cyber-physical systems can be designed,
scaled, implemented, and maintained. The established track record of computer-based systems
research in domains where functional, performance, and reliability requirements mandate the
tight integration of information processing and physical processes make ECBS an excellent venue
for exploring the computing foundations of these societal issues.
ECBS 2011 is co-located with the 16th IEEE International Conference on the Engineering of
Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS), and the 8th IEEE International Conference and
Workshops on Engineering of Autonomic and Autonomous Systems (EASe). In addition, the 8th
IEEE Workshop on Model-Based Development for Computer-Based Systems (MBD), and the 6th
IEEE International Workshop on UML and AADL are held concurrently with these meetings.
This year, ECBS received 40 papers in the regular and industrial tracks, and based on over 130
reviews from the program committee and external reviewers, 22 papers appear (an acceptance
rate of 0.55). The entire proceedings include 4 additional papers published as part of the Doctoral
Symposium, as well as 6 papers from the MBD Workshop. Each paper, regardless of track,
received at least 3 reviews.
The success of ECBS depends completely on the effort, talent, and energy of researchers in the
field of computer-based systems who have written and submitted papers on a variety of topics.
Praise is also deserved for the program committee members and external reviewers who have
invested significant time in analyzing and assessing multiple papers, who hold and maintain a
high standard of quality for this conference. Additional thanks are given to the IEEE Computer
Society Technical Council on Engineering of Computer-Based Systems for their sponsorship, and
to E. Brookes Little and Lisa O’Conner of IEEE for service above and beyond the call of duty
regarding organizational and production details that permitted relaxed deadlines for conference
participants.
Finally, we welcome you to Las Vegas, NV, long a destination for both American and
international travelers. We hope that you will take advantage of the many sights to see in the city,
as well as the many natural and man-made wonders nearby, during your stay.
