Font Design

Research output: Non-textual formDesign

Abstract

This original design emerged from ongoing research relating type and typography to 'sense of place' and urban spaces. This digital display typeface is based on the late 19th century ceramic street signs found on many Belfast streets. The typeface reflects the idiosyncratic nature of the original lettering and reflects aspects of the ceramic tile construction of the street signs as a design feature in digital form. This lettering style is unusual and unique to Belfast. The design encodes a particular resonance for place and offers the opportunity to investigate this relationship of material signs to place present in other urban locations.
