Florence Augusta Hamilton Lewis: Mathematical Education and Mathematical Influence

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

C.S. Lewis’s mother, Florence (Flora) Augusta Hamilton (18 May 1862-23 August 1908), appears briefly in the major biographies of Lewis, with all authors noting her education. These accounts contain a number of contradictory statements regarding where and when Flora obtained her degree and the precise nature of the qualification she obtained. This paper seeks to clarify the nature of Flora’s educational experience and attainments in Belfast and makes a number of suggestions regarding her possible influence on the mathematical capabilities of her sons.
