Abstract
Sander tested the boundaries and combinations of artistic genres. He researched possibilities of multi- perspective sculpture and the combination of different fields in fine art such as print sculpture, photography and textiles. This installation can be described as a 3dimensional photo.
In the context of his previous research, Sander transforms the open-air space above Merlin College canteen space. Viewed from one direction, the image particles resolve into coherent images, but as we enter into them from the opposite side, we become a character in an environment looking out, and our perception changes.
The artwork is made up of semi-transparent images on fabric, creating the impression of a permanently changing forest above the viewer`s head. There are trees viewed either as their image or transparent shadows and reflections. A complex immersive installation that combines different art-forms.
We depend on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe to the wood we use. The amazing scientific processes behind the wonders and previously unknown life of trees and their communication abilities of which we are blissfully unaware becomes only more and more clear for us now as the last primeval forest disappears.
The students at Merlin College played a vital part in the making. They spent time in the woods photographing the trees until they found the chosen one, a tree that stood out amongst all the rest, an ancient beech
tree.
This artwork was commissioned under the per cent for art scheme.
